How was the monthly meal shop born?

Through wine, gin and a bit of insanity!

I'm writing this while wearing tights from a middle-aisle-Aldi-special and a black singlet that's older than my decade long marriage. Most of my clothes have similar stories because I love clothes shopping even less than I love food shopping...which is to say, I loathe it.

Let's be honest, the weekly shop is a time thief.

The driving to the shops, negotiating traffic, circling the carpark like a hawk...getting ragged when someone steals your spot!

Navigating crowds who move at the pace of a snail - right down the middle of the aisle.

AND THEN they stop. right. in. the middle!

Not to mention playing dogem cars with the trolleys, finding all the items that weren't where they were last time, into the trolley - out onto the conveyor - then back into the trolley, only to find that you can't get everything on your bloody list so you end up having to go to 4 different shops. And then before you know it, half the day is gone! FML

I have never liked shopping, I have vivid memories of being dragged to the shops by my mother, probably for something important, but definitely a process I detested. Although sometimes I'd get an iced chocolate so...swings and roundabouts! Nevertheless, once I started adulting for real-life the process of essentially repeating the same thing each week just grated on me.

Such a waste of time, there had to be a better way. (Spoiler: There is)

Yes there's online shopping, which I have used, but someone else picking my fruit and veg? - not a fan.

Someone else deciding what to substitute on my list? - no thanks

AND I don't think I've ever had my full list delivered! There's always been at least one thing missing, normally the item that I needed the most!

I work a full-time job and from when I get home from work to when my kids go to bed at 7:30 cos they're still young, I have about 2 hours.

2 hours to fit in homework, dinner, bath and bed routine, and i know I'm lucky to get that long! Which means my only time for grocery shopping are the weekends.

Those oh-too-short 2 day breaks that we get to try and cram a life into.

Washing, sport, cleaning, catching up on life admin...then three different stores just to stay within budget and meet our dietary needs?

By the time I unpack the final bags, I'm wrecked.

And worst of all - I've missed out on being present with the people I care about the most.

At some point I just got jack of it all. Had a little tantrum. Drank a little wine…..and gin. Then I decided something had to change.

So I started saying NO.

❌ No to spending hours shopping for the same things, week in, week out
❌ No to missing time with my family because of a forgotten ingredient
❌ No to oversized 4WDs stealing three car parks
❌ No to supermarket slogs and slow walkers in the middle of the aisle
❌ No to food waste and budget blowouts
❌ No to meal planning fatigue and weeknight chaos

But I also said a loud, guilt-free YES.

✅ YES to having a meal plan that works for us
✅ YES to healthy, home-cooked meals—without spending hours in the kitchen
✅ YES to variety and flexibility
✅ YES to always having the ingredients I need
✅ YES to my husband being able to cook dinner without calling me
✅ YES to saving real money
✅ And most of all—YES to more time with my kids and some actual breathing room in my week

But... How?

I wanted a meal planning system that worked with the recipes we already loved—not something that forced me into rigid templates or required yet another subscription. I didn’t want another app or tool that created more work than it saved.

And I definitely didn’t want to keep opening my pantry and discovering I was missing the one ingredient I needed.

I tried everything. Honestly? None of it worked quite how I wanted. I’m not a fan of changing my ways just to suit a system. So I did what any mum does when she's fed up:

I made my own.

Meet the System That Changed Everything

Thanks to my background as a research scientist (and an unapologetic spreadsheet nerd), I spent the last two years building a meal planning system that actually works—one that started just for me and my family.

As I tested and tweaked it, I added our recipes. Built in flexibility. Made it fast. Now, I can plan a whole month of mealsin the same amount of time it used to take me to plan just one week. And best of all?

👉 I only do one major grocery shop per month.
(With a few top-ups for milk, bread, and fruit.)

And get this:
💰 Our monthly grocery bill dropped by a few hundred dollars.

Here’s why:

  • We stopped overbuying “just in case” items—because the system tells you exactly what you need

  • When you only shop once a month, you avoid those tempting impulse buys (especially when you're hungry!)

  • Everything is prepped, planned and accounted for—no surprises, no waste

The “Magic Button” That Made My Mum Friends Speechless

A few months ago, I was out with some other school mums and talk turned to meal planning. Some were juggling subscriptions, others were frustrated with delivery services or spending hours at markets. When I casually mentioned that I only shop once a month, the table went quiet.

They knew I cook a lot, and that our pantry is... not huge. When I told them I just select recipes from my spreadsheet, pop in how many servings we need each night, hit a button, and boom—my full shopping list generates itself—they were stunned.

No flipping through cookbooks.
No double-checking what’s in the pantry.
Just a list that works.

What About Perishables?

No, I’m not storing apples for four weeks. We top up fresh items as needed, and we use a weekly fruit and veg box subscription that gets delivered straight from the markets. It's fresher than the supermarket stuff (which is often stored for weeks anyway) and lasts us a solid 2–3 weeks.

Breakfasts and lunches? The system covers those too. Most of us use the same staples—milk, bread, cereal, fruit—so they’re easy to plan and budget for in advance. There's even a system included to help with that.

Here’s the Real Game-Changer

The system gives you both:

🗓 A weekly breakdown of ingredients
🛒 And a 5-week total so you can plan big

You can:

  • Set up online grocery orders in one go

  • Bulk buy perishables for a discount

  • Take your list to the butcher and negotiate on larger cuts (which they love)

  • Save time, save money, and save your sanity

And the best part?

Planning for 5 weeks now takes the same amount of time as it used to take me for 1.

Because the system does the heavy lifting.

It’s smart. It’s flexible. And it’s designed for real families who want real food—without sacrificing half their weekend to get it.
